About the Society
Welcome to the website of The Lux et Veritas Society at Indiana University or LeV Society for short. Here you may find basic information regarding events for faculty and graduate students. The LeV Society is a local expression of Faculty Commons.
Lux et Veritas is the Latin motto of Indiana University and means “Light and Truth.” Our name has a two-fold meaning. First, “light and truth” has deep connections with the person of Jesus of Nazareth, of whom we are unapologetically followers/apprentices. Second, “light and truth” expresses our commitment to the university and its commitment to furthering knowledge and transmitting knowledge. The two-fold meaning is expressed in our Vision, Mission and Values.
Vision — What is the ultimate end for which we exist?
Jesus Christ made known to the whole world
Mission — What are we trusting God for and calling you to be a part of here at IU?
To establish a growing, supportive community of Christian faculty and grad students and to maintain an open, stimulating Christian intellectual presence on campus.
Values — What does the Society esteem and strive for as we come together to fulfill this mission?
Life-giving: partnering with the Holy Spirit to give what we have been given to help restore shalom to each individual in relation to God, to others and to creation.
Community: resisting the pull of academic life to exist in isolation and coming together in love and truth as the body of Christ to be a reflection of the Trinitarian God and thus be witnesses both corporately and individually
Humility: we not only look to our own interests but also the interests of others, helping each other in love to grow as scholars and resist the temptation of intellectual pride
Knowledge: both knowledge of God and ourselves; knowledge plays a vital role in restoring shalom as we follow Jesus, including the knowledge within one’s discipline;
Wisdom: encouraging discernment as we seek to be faithful witnesses of our Lord Jesus Christ on the university campus and in our academic disciplines
Blessing the University: seek ways to bless all of those who are a part of university life and beyond no matter one’s beliefs
